We Remember Pope Francis

We Remember Pope Francis

We pause to remember Pope Francis, who died on Easter Monday at the age of 88. As the leader of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis was a voice of peace, compassion and hope in our world.

Pope Francis was a great pastor who spoke from the heart and with tender affection, demonstrating compassion, care and respect for all, inspired by the ways and teachings of Christ. He reminded us that we are all children of God, deeply loved, and called to care for one another, especially those who are poor, sick or forgotten.

Pope Francis’ papacy was marked by two main themes: mercy and evangelization. He famously remarked that the Church is first and foremost, a place to heal wounds. Pope Francis encouraged the Church to show the merciful face of Christ and he also emphasized the importance of our personal witness to the light of faith, drawing others to the life-giving joy of the Gospel. Although he is no longer with us, we can keep his memory alive by being kind to others, taking care of the world around us and choosing to love like Jesus.

Pope Francis had a deep connection to Catholic education because, early in his priesthood, then-Fr. Jorge Mario Bergoglio was a high school teacher in Argentina. The compassion, kindness and understanding that Pope Francis demonstrated in his life were an inspiration to York Catholic District School Board (YCDSB) teachers and staff, as they were for educators around the world. Flags will be lowered to half-mast at YCDSB schools in a sign of respect to him.

As we celebrate Pope Francis’ life and legacy, let us pray together for the repose of his soul:

We begin in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit:

Loving and merciful God,

We thank You for the life and service of Pope Francis,
who led Your Church with humility, compassion and faith.

You called him to be a shepherd of Your people,
to proclaim the Gospel,
to care for the poor and forgotten,
and to show us Your mercy in a modern world.

Now that his earthly journey is complete,
welcome him into the light of Your presence.
Grant him eternal rest, and let perpetual light shine upon him.

May his witness continue to inspire Your Church, and may we honour his memory by walking in faith and love.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
